Недеља здраве хране: HEALTHY EATING
HEALTHY EATING
Class: III5 – Culinary technician
Organised by English Language Teacher: Ružica Topalović
Date: 20 October 2022
World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year worldwide on October 16th to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with hunger and food security. World Food Day received the Nobel Prize in Peace for 2020 for their efforts to combat hunger, contribute to peace in conflict areas, and for playing a leading role in stopping the use of hunger in the form of a weapon for war and conflict.
In order to celebrate this day our school has organised many classes and activities related to healthy diet from 11 to 18 October 2022.
One of the activities dedicated to this theme week was the workshop in English language class with the students from III-5 class. As an introduction to the topic, the students discussed what kind of food is healthy, whether they have a healthy diet and what other activities apart from a balanced diet can have impact on long life expectancy.
The students watched a video in English called Healthy eating which consists of three parts. In the first part they could hear different people talking about their eating habits and what kind of food they consider healthy. Unfortunately, due to their busy lifestyles, many people eat fast food and do not have much time to cook at home.
The second part of the film presented a famous Italian restaurant in New York whose owner moved from Italy and started his own business more than 30 years ago. The Italian cuisine is famous around the world not only for its various kinds of pasta, but also for its use of olive oil, fresh vegetables such as onions, garlic, tomatoes, rice and spinach.
The final part of the video presented a Japanese restaurant and how they make their traditional dishes. What is specific and unique for Japan is that they are the only nation who uses raw fish in their cuisine. Using seaweed to make sushi is another a unique quality of Japanese cooking. They also use a lot of fresh ingredients in line with the season and eat small portions of food slowly. That’s why Japanese women have the longest life expectancy in the world, which is 86 while in the USA the average life expectancy is only 78. Both the Italians and Japanese agree that enjoying food, eating with family and friends is another very important factor to have a healthy life.
The students were organised in five groups and given the material with questions. Their task was to watch the video and circle the correct questions according to what they hear in the clip. The two guest teachers who took part in the class, Sofija Pavlović Luković and Tanja Lazić, answered the questions very well together with the students. I am happy to say that both the teachers and the students enjoyed watching the video and participating in the activities.
